Narcotics Sergeant had withdrawn Rs. 24.19 mn from his account - DSG

Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathna yesterday ordered to further remand the two suspects of Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) who were arrested on charges of maintaining links with drug peddlers, till August 18.

The two PNB officers were identified as Constable Batuwattage Ruwan Pushpakumara and Sergeant Saman Kumara Jayasinghe. Deputy Solicitor General (DSG) Dileepa Peiris appearing for the Attorney General informed the Magistrate that transaction details with regard to Rs.24.19 million from the bank account used by Saman Kumara Jayasinghe (second suspect) had been found and the suspect had withdrawn this money on 53 occasions.

 Meanwhile, the CID had earlier stated that the Colombo High Court had already issued a suspension order regarding Rs.4.6 million which had been linked to 43 bank accounts as per Section 7 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) stated that the suspects had accrued property valued at Rs.100 million and noted that a sizable number of land deeds had been turned into low priced ones. The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for August 18.
