Interdicted Negombo Prison SP Sampayo remanded

Former Superintendent of the Negombo Prison Anuruddha Sampayo, who had been in hiding for 11 days after being issued a court warrant, was arrested after a joint operation by the Intelligence services to get him out of hiding, Police Spokesman SSP Jaliya Senaratne said yesterday.

Sampayo who was arrested by the CID on Sunday was remanded by the Negombo Magistrate till today.

The Police Media Spokesman said the State Intelligence Service and the Police  Intelligence Unit were involved in the operation.

According to the intelligence operation, the OIC of the Negombo Police Headquarters went to Kurunegala with a team to arrest Sampayo. SSP Jaliya Senaratne said that Sampayo was in hiding and that he was not staying in one place but was moving from place to place. He said that this was revealed during an operation carried out with the assistance of the State Intelligence Service where telephone conversations were analyzed of close associates of Sampayo and his immediate family members.

“The first information leading to Sampayo’s arrest was received on May 26. The IGP instructed the CID to investigate the matter.

"The CID also took the advice of the Attorney General in this regard and reported to the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on July 2. Accordingly, the court issued warrants for the arrest of four Negombo prison officers including Anuruddha Sampayo”.
