A pregnant mother who had contracted COVID-19 delivered a healthy child at the Eastern Colombo General Hospital in Mulleriyawa yesterday night and the child tested negative for COVID-19.
According to hospital director Dr. Priyantha Karunaratne, the mother gave birth through a caesarean surgery performed by a group of 35 staffers including consultant gynaecologists.
He said that the infant will be breastfed him from the mother.The hospital director said the commitment of the hospital staffers helped deliver a healthy child.
This pregnant woman who had returned from a foreign country on July 10 was kept under quarantine at Kandakadu center and she was tested positive for COVID-19 following a PCR test conducted on July 21, he said.
However the PCR test conducted on her on Saturday confirmed that she had not contracted the virus. A PCR test is to be conducted on her and the child on August 4 again.
