The long-awaited Schools Football tournaments conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association (SLSFA) is likely to regain momentum, almost after a lapse of two years as the governing body is expected to conduct the Ministry of Education under-20 tournament from November 16 onwards.

After the regime change earlier this year, its new President Dilruk Jayawardena was quite optimistic in conducting a tournament to kick start the game, which was in doldrums in the schools arena. They made several valiant efforts to resume, but the ongoing coronavirus pandemic put them at bay.

The Education Ministry (EM) on Thursday has given a slight indication verbally to the SLSFA to resume their competitions gradually with stipulated health regulations. Nevertheless, with this confirmation, the SLSFA intends to conduct the senior under-20 tournament among the schools island-wide which will attract over 100 schools. With the GCE Advanced Level Examinations scheduled to be completed November 12, the ministry has advised the SLSFA to be prepared and to draw up a proposal in order to conduct the tournament.

The SLSFA is to meet their representatives and the stakeholders to draw up a plan to submit to the EM before commencing the competition during this said period, where they expect a minimum of eight weeks of competition, which they will discuss soon after the General Elections to be held on August 5.

“We are happy to hear a verbal confirmation from the Education Ministry last Thursday. We have to wait until the General Elections are over to call for a meeting with our representatives, after which we will discuss and draw up a plan to submit to the EM. I hope everything will move accordingly; we might be able to conduct a much-awaited tournament to infuse some life to the game in the schools arena where it has a barren sheet when it comes to competition in the last two years,” said Jayawardena.
