Elect ‘honourable Members’ to Parliament: Kitchilan

Tuan Kitchilan, contesting the election from the Gampaha District under the United National Party (UNP), has requested the public to elect representatives who could be called ‘honourable Members’ to Parliament at the August 5 General Election.

Kitchilan, addressing the media in Gampaha, said it was of utmost importance to send educated politicians with a clean record to Parliament in order to restore public confidence in the legislature and the country’s political system, which has been on the decline over the years.

The UNP Gampaha district candidate said another grave issue facing the country today was drug abuse by youth. He added that all parliamentarians, irrespective of party affiliations, should commit to end this menace and protect the country’s future generations.

Speaking about the UNP’s chances at the upcoming polls, Kitchilan said that the party had nominated a good blend of youth and experience, with educational backgrounds being considered when selecting candidates as well.

He said that the United National Party has candidates who can develop the country in line with 21st-century expectations. If elected, Kitchilan said he would strive to develop the Gampaha District while preserving its heritage, cultural practices, and environment.

He said he would put special focus on developing the tourism sector as the Katunayake Airport belongs to the Gampaha District. Kitchilan added that it has been under-utilised by politicians of the district, as tourists who land in Katunayake go spend time in other districts.

Kitchilan said he would strive to build facilities in the Gampaha district to keep such tourists for a while, in order to allow those in the tourist sector to earn more money.

The UNP member also said he would strive to protect the environment in Gampaha, and would not allow the district to become a ‘concrete jungle’ in the name of development.
