Irfan Pathan and Martin Guptill show early interest on LPL

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan and New Zealand’s dashing opening batsman Martin Guptill are two of the biggest international stars who have already shown interest in competing in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) Franchise based Twenty20 Cricket Tournament which is set to get underway next month.

The 23-match League will be worked off at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Dambulla Stadium, Pallekele Stadium and Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota.

The five franchised teams which would be competing in this T20 tournament are Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna.

“There are about 143 overseas players in the list who are very keen to play in this tournament and now it is up to the respective franchises to select these cricketers,” a high ranking official at Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) told the Daily News yesterday.

Pathan has emerged as one of the best all-rounders in this format of the game having a huge amount of experience after representing Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rising Pune Supergiants, Kings XI Punjab, Delhi

Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL).

Meanwhile, Guptill who is a veteran of 253 T20s has also made his presence felt in the high profile IPL having represented Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab with great success.

“We have also asked the local clubs to nominate two players for this event and so there would be a total of 48 top domestic players from the 24 Premier Clubs who would be eligible to represent the four franchises.”

“In addition, we have a total 80 national players who are currently contracted with SLC and they will also be strong contenders to make it to the final squad,” the official added further.

“Some of the Premier Clubs have also named young promising players in the Under-23 and Under-19 category but altogether it is up to the four franchises to make a final decision in picking their squad,” the official emphasised.

Apart from a star-studded list of overseas players, a number of veteran foreign coaches have also shown their interest in making their mark at this event.

“It is quite encouraging to note that we have a total of 15 top foreign coaches who have shown interest in coming forward to be in charge of these four franchises under different categories,” the official added further.
