EC tells overseas returnees to bring passports to vote

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya in a communiqué said that it is compulsory for returnees from overseas to bring their passports along when they come to vote on August 5.

He also said that it is compulsory for all electors to produce one of the following identification documents to the polling staff when they go to cast their vote.

These include National ID, valid passport, driving licence, government pensioners identity card, elders’ identity card, clergy/priest identity card, temporary ID issued by the Elections Commission or the special permit issued by the Department for the Registration of Persons.

Any elector who fails to produce the identification document will not be issued a ballot paper and the suspicious individual will be handed over to the Police for attempting to rig the vote.
