Met. Dept. warning: Heavy rain, Strong Wind

The Meteorology Department has issued a warning of heavy rain and strong wind to several provinces, which is valid until 10.30am July 30.
 
According to the warning issued for the land area, “The showery condition over the island, particularly in the south-western part is expected to enhance to some extent during 28 and 29 of July 2020 due to a low level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka. Very heavy rainfalls above 150 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Heavy rainfalls about 100 mm are likely at some places in Northern, North-central and Northwestern provinces and Trincomalee district. Wind speed can increase up to (60-70) kmph at times in Southern province, Polonnaruwa, and Matale districts and along the western slopes of the central hills".
 
The Department of Meteorology advises that people should: Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees, drivers and people using roads in the hilly areas are requested to be vigilant, Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms, Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms, Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc, Beware of fallen trees and power lines, For emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities.
