SJB is a separate party - Ranil

United National Front (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is a separate party which is registered with the Election Commission and has been accepted by the courts and if they try to force their way into the UNP Headquarters ‘Sirikotha’ it would be a matter that would be taken to the Police and the courts.

He said that the UNP was the party of D.S.Senanayake, Dudley Senanayake, John Kotelawala, R.Premadasa and D.B. Wijetunga, adding that the SJB is a separate party altogether and not an ally of the UNP. This, he said, has been established through a court verdict.

According to Wickremesinghe, those who are selected and appointed by the SJB after the election will not be able to rejoin the UNP, adding that as per the court ruling they would lose their place in both parties.

Pointing to the plight of Bandaranaike, he said that he had left the UNP and formed a separate party and it was the members of that same party that assassinated him eventually.

Therefore, Wickremesinghe warned that they should decide if they want to be with the UNP or the SJB prior to the election as they cannot plant their feet in both places.

He added that the SJB is not a group that was established as per a decision taken by the UNP Working Committee, but a separate party registered with the Election Commission as per the wishes of the former UNP Deputy Leader and a group of his supporters.

The UNP Leader noted that SJB General Secretary Ranjith Maddumabandara had filed a case in the courts with the aim of using the UNP name to gain votes, but the courts had decided that this could cause harm to the UNP. He said that unlike some leaders whose aim is to gain the power of Sirikotha, the UNP’s aim is to win the election.

Wickremesinghe made these comments addressing a public rally organized to promote UNP candidates in Wellawaya yesterday (24).
