Lecturer killed by jumbo

A young university lecturer attached to the Jaffna university was the latest victim of a wild elephant attack in Sri Lanka, officials confirmed, after a growing spate of similar incidents across the country.

The lecturer Gayathri Dilrukshi, a 32-year-old had been on her way to their hostels accompanied by another lecturer when she was attacked by an elephant.

She was admitted to the Kilinochchi base hospital with severe injuries.

The attack has surprised many as it had taken place in a populated area frequented by locals.

A total of 121 people were killed by elephants across the country last year, up from 96 the year before, according to government data. A record 405 elephants were also killed last year.
