Over 40,000 Sri Lankans waiting to be repatriated

Over 40,000 Sri Lankans stranded due to the COVID-19 pandemic are currently waiting to return to the country since a temporary halt was announced in the repatriation process after the Coronavirus outbreak at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation centre.

According to the Additional Secretary to the President for Foreign Relations Admiral Prof. Jayanath Colombage, there are around 40,000 stranded Lankans waiting to be repatriated, but due to the current situation, the process has been temporarily halted.

He added, “Until the Sri Lankan Army gives the green light to recommence the process according to the availability of quarantine centres, the repatriation process has been halted for now”.

Yesterday (17) night, a special Emirates charter flight repatriated around 60 Sri Lankans from Dubai.

The flight landed at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) at around 11 pm. The passengers had booked flights and made the necessary arrangements in advance.
