The driver of the tipper truck that ran over three police officers at the Kongama checkpoint on Monday night killing one of the police officers was arrested last afternoon (14) in the Ranala area in the Hungama Police Division. He has been identified as a 34-year-old resident of Lunama, Ambalanthota.

The other two police officers were injured in the incident and admitted to the Matara Hospital. The police had found the tipper abandoned at a compound of a house in Kattakaduwa, Hungama earlier yesterday.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Jaliya Senaratne said that two police officers attached to the Kirinda Police Station had gone on patrol around 11.00 pm on Monday and they had stopped the tipper on suspicion to search the vehicle. However, the driver of the tipper had not stopped the vehicle and had sped off. The police officers had then notified the police checkpoint in Kongama and they had stopped the tipper.

Upon being notified, the police officers at the checkpoint had managed to stop the driver. They had been inspecting the tipper truck when the policemen who were chasing the vehicle arrived there. The police officers subsequently issued the driver a spot fine permit as a temporary licence and warned him against reckless driving and failing to stop.

The tripper truck driver had then proceeded towards Hakmana direction. He had then turned the vehicle and come towards Matara around 10 minutes later and deliberately run over the police officers at the checkpoint. The Police Constable was killed in the incident while the two Sergeants were injured.

The deceased officer was identified as a 36-year-old attached to the Hakmana Police. He is a resident of Walasmulla area.

The Police Spokesman said that the arrested driver of the tipper truck will be produced in the Matara Magistrate’s Court today (15).
