Confiscated beedi leaves to be destroyed

The Cabinet decided to destroy the stocks of beedi leaves which will be confiscated by the Sri Lanka Customs hereafter, Co-cabinet Spokesman Information and Communication Technology, Higher Education, Technology and Innovations Minister Dr Bandula Gunawardena said.

Taking into consideration the adverse impact on the health of those who consume those beedi leaf and certain beedi leave related rackets during the previous regime which were highlighted by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Cabinet unanimously decided to destroy stocks of beedi leaf that will be confiscated in future.

"Under the Chapter 235 of the Customs Ordinance, powers vested with Sri Lanka Customs to destroy or vend the stocks of Beedi leaves confiscated by the Sri Lanka Customs.

But several complaints on rackets have been received to the Security Council." said the Minister.
