Fifty six COVID positive cases detected

Update: Fifty six (56) inmates at the Kandakadu Drug Rehabilitation Centre have been tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday.

The number is expected to increase as the authorities had subjected more inmates to the PCR test and the results were expected late last night. The authorities said that around 450 inmates at the centre had been subjected to the PCR test.

In addition an instructor attached to the rehabilitation centre had also tested positive. She is a resident of Marawila.

Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe said these individuals are reported to have come into direct contact with an inmate from the Welikada prison who was detected with COVID-19 recently.

The inmate is said to have undergone rehabilitation at the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Kandakadu over the last three months.

Around 60 of the drug addicts who were apprehended in Suduwella around a month ago during a drug bust had been sent to the Kandakadu Drug Rehabilitation Centre. Dr. Jasinghe added that necessary measures to conduct further PCR tests and quarantine will be carried out by Health and Security officials.


57 tests positive for COVID-19-Time: 15:37

Nearly 450 inmates and staff at the Prison were subjected to PCR tests. 56 have tested positive for COVID-19 after the PCR test, stated the Government information Department.

Meanwhile, An officer attached to the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre also tested positive for COVID-19 from Marawila today.

Accordingly, the total number of COVID-19 positive patients in the country stands at 2151.
