Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera submitted a Cabinet Paper containing benefits for electricity consumers who ran high bills during the lockdown period.

Minister Amaraweera proposed to the Cabinet that electricity bills should be reduced by 25 percent where consumers have used electricity between 0-90 units in March, April and May.

The Minister also proposed to Cabinet to grant a grace period of three months to pay up while there will not be any disconnections or late fees.

Minister Amaraweera informed Cabinet that about 73 percent of in-house electricity consumers will obtain direct benefits through this relief package.

After a lengthy discussion on this matter, the President, Prime Minister and the Cabinet of Ministers reached a decision to provide more relief to electricity consumers other than relief already proposed.

Minister Gunawardena stressed that the relief granted already will not change and more relief will be added to the relief package already granted to the consumers.
