Johansson to hand over ‘Black Widow’ baton to Pugh

We are still months away from the release of Marvel’s highly anticipated ‘Black Widow’ starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh in the lead.

Since the film's announcement, there have been many fan-theories flooding the internet about the possible outcome of this film and how it lays the foundation for the next phase of the MCU, and now in a recent interview, director Cate Shortland may have just revealed all.

In an interview with Empire, Cate revealed that the film will indeed be the last for Scarlett as Natasha Romanoff, but it will be just the beginning for Florence as Yelena. Admitting that producer Kevin Feige and the team knew Pugh was good (considering her previous work and even an Oscar nomination) but they didn’t know “how great”.

“Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline,” Cate said.

‘Black Widow’ will also provide a closure of sorts for Natasha Romanoff fans who were upset that the character didn’t get her deserved send off post her sacrifice in ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Confirming that this film will indeed be the end of the line for the character, she said, “So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring. I think that’s a fitting ending for her.”

Shortland’s comment has given rise to speculations that it will be just the beginning for Pugh, as a larger role in the MCU is being planned.

‘Black Widow’ will be set in between the events of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. The film is rumoured to have Rober Downy Jr in a cameo as the character Iron Man.

Initially set for a May 1 release, the film is now expected to arrive in theatres in November 2020 owing to delays due to the coronavirus crisis all over the world. IANS
