Enjoining Order extended

The Colombo District Court yesterday extended its Enjoining Order preventing General Secretary of ‘Sinhale Organization’ Medille Pagngnaloka Thera from defaming President’s Counsel Ali Sabri in any manner inclusive of making statements and publishing any defamatory article in any forum including Facebook. The order will be effective until July 16.

Colombo District Court Judge Amali Ranaweera made the order pursuant to a libel lawsuit filed by Ali Sabri PC whose name is now included in the National List of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) for the upcoming General Elections.

Plaintiff Ali Sabry PC states that the defendant in a press conference held on May 13, 2020 had made certain statements directly naming and identifying and referring to the Plaintiff which was reported in Colombo Today news website linking to a video on YouTube.

The Plaintiff pleads that the Defendant acted with malice when he made the said statements.

The Plaintiff further pleads that by reason of the said defamatory statements, ex-facie the Plaintiff suffered grave injury and loss to his good name, reputation, character and credit as an individual, professional, politician and in society. The Plaintiff has been brought into and exposed to public contempt, ridicule, humiliation, hatred and odium by the said statements.

The Plaintiff stated that he has suffered loss and damage which he assesses at Rs.500 million. President's Counsel Romesh de Silva, Counsels Sugath Caldera and Ruwantha Cooray under the instruction of Counsel Sanath Wijewardane appeared for the plaintiff.
