All schools adhering to health measures – Education Minister

Education, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said that according to information received, all schools that reopened yesterday adhered to the recommended health guidelines and assured parents that their children were safe when at school.

The Minister made this statement after observing precautionary measures taken at Mahinda Rajapaksa College, Matara and the Primary Section of Sujatha Balika Vidyalaya, Matara as students of Grade 5, 11 and 13 returned to school after a 116 day vacation last morning.

He said that he would be visiting schools in Hakmana and Kamburupitiya and that two hundred ministry officials were visiting schools in other parts of the Island.

The Ministry of Education took steps to close all schools on March 12, 2020 to prevent the spread of COVID19, a decision which has been commended by the World Health Organisation.

Minister Alahapperuma said that it was not politicians who should be recommending decisions with regard to education. He said that he believed that at all times the ministry officials should be guided by the recommendations and wishes of students, teachers and principals. He said that he was proud of the way all principals and teachers had handled the COVID-19 Pandemic and made optimum use of modern technology to carry out distance education.
