National weightlifters begin training

The National Weightlifers have begun training at the Sports Ministry Complex according to Health Ministry regulations. The weightlifters are preparing for the Asian Championship, Commonwealth Games, Olympics and other international competitions.

Eleven weightlifters Indika Chathuranga Dissanayake (who won a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games), Chinthana Geethal Vithanage (2006 gold medalist and 2010 silver medalist at the Commonwealth Games), Anton Sudesh Peiris (2010 bronze medalist), Chathuranga Lakmal (2018 bronze medalist), Hansani Gomes (2018 bronze medalist) along with Ushan Charuka, Shanaka Peters, Chamari Warnakulasuriya and Chathurika Priyanthi are undergoing training along with Isuru Kumara and Thilanga Viraj Palangasinghe.

R.B. Wickramasinghe who has produced many weightlifters who have brought honour and fame to the country by winning medals is in charge of the National Pool and he is confident that they will continue to win many medals for the nation at the forthcoming Asian Championship and Commonwealth Games. The Asian Championship was scheduled to be held in Uzbekistan in April 2020 but had to be postponed due to the outbreak of Coronavirus.He is confident that with more training they could even fare better in future international tournaments
