Navy seizes 400kg of Kerala cannabis

The Sri Lanka Navy seized more than 400kg of Kerala cannabis from the sea between Mandaitivu Island and Kalmunai Point, Jaffna yesterday.

The street price of the stock is said to be about Rs. 60 million. The stock was handed over to the Special Task Force (STF) in Jaffna for further investigations. The STF and Police had reportedly arrested one suspect linked to the incident while a search was underway to arrest those suspects who had fled by boat after discarding the cannabis parcels to the sea, said Navy spokesman Lt. Commander Isuru Suriyabandara.

Navy personnel attached to the Northern Naval Command patrolling the seas between Mandaitivu Island and Kalmunai Point had spotted some men on a dinghy throwing several parcels into the sea and escaping the scene.

“The officers found 12 bags drifting in the waters and they were found to be stacked with small packets of Kerala cannabis. Navy found 168 packets in all,” Navy sources said.
