Port strike over Eastern Terminal suspended

Colombo Port employees who launched a continuous strike campaign suspended their action following discussions with Minister Johnston Fernando yesterday.

They were demanding not to privatise the Eastern Terminal of the Colombo port functioning under the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).

All port trade unions participated in the campaign. “The decision to carry out the strike was backed by all trade unions unanimously demanding to roll back the decision of privatising the Eastern Terminal, which is the only terminal that can cater to huge cargo carrier ships,” a trade union activist said. It has been reported that the previous government had entered into an agreement with an Indian company to privatise the Eastern Terminal. The employees are demanding to install the three Granrty Cranes, which have been already imported, at the Eastern Terminal. An activist told the Daily News that they will conduct the strike campaign until they receive an acceptable solution from the authorities. It is significant that the strike campaign is backed by all trade unions.
