GMOA wants tobacco, alcohol out of poll campaign

The GMOA warned that will not hesitate to name politicians who use tobacco and alcohol for their election campaigns as ‘unsuitable’ to represent the people.

The Election Commission and the Health authorities should take stern action against all such politicians, newly appointed Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) Secretary Dr. Senal Fernando said.

Addressing a press conference held at the GMOA office in Colombo yesterday he said that the GMOA will not hesitate to name such politicians as `unsuitable’ to represent people. At this time, the health authorities are warning about another wave of COVID-19 and therefore it is required to take stern decisions. Dr. Fernando said the GMOA members had said that Sri Lankans were saved from the COVID-19 because the GMOA member doctors along with health staff and the Forces worked hard under the guidance provided by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The GMOA will appoint a special committee in order to look into certain issues especially re-commencing tourism and make recommendations to the Government and the Health Ministry, he added.
