Timber racket uncovered

A police party on duty in Orubendiwewa on the Padiyathalava road found a consignment of teak planks and burutha logs hidden beneath concrete metal in a tipper.

The consignment and the concrete metal as well as the tipper were taken to the police station in Mahiyangana for a preliminary inquiry and further action.

At the time the police halted the tipper, the driver attempted to flee, but the police caught up with him.

Police were able to uncover a timber racket too during the inquiry.

The lot of timber, worth about Rs.1 million, along with the driver would be produced before court, police said.
