Lenders, embassies extend full support to revive tourism

Multilateral lending organisations and foreign embassies have pledged their fullest support to revive the country’s tourism industry battered badly by the COVID 19 pandemic.

They participated in a roundtable dialogue in Colombo yesterday Representatives from UN agencies such as ILO, UNDP and development partners such as World Bank, ADB, EU, USAID, and MDF Australia participated in the discussion, which was held under the theme of building a safer and resilient tourism sector in Sri Lanka :Post-COVID 19.

Industrial Exports and Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranathunga sending a congratulatory message, to the dialogue has thanked all the development partners for their sustainable and innovative intervention for long term resilience which would help boost the Sri Lanka’s tourism sector,” he added.

“My ministry stands ready to support all initiatives taken to recover tourism,” he said. “Working together with the SLTDA and the UNDP, the development of a roadmap towards building a safer and resilient tourism sector in Sri Lanka after the COVID 19 and performance of a status and impacts assessment of the sector in the COVID 19 context will assist in streamlining all development efforts,” he said.

The government of Sri Lanka through its efforts of working towards the vision of increasing tourist arrivals to seven million people annually and adding a foreign exchange inflow of USD 10 billion to the domestic economy from tourism, need to take immediate action to support the most impacted in the sector,” he added.

“However, this global pandemic calls for us to do more to recover strongly. Therefore, the government together with all stakeholders need to work towards positioning Sri Lanka as a high value destination, offering extraordinary experiences that reflects country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage,” the Minister said.
