Rajitha Senaratne withdraws appeal

The appeal petition filed by former Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne challenging the Colombo High Court’s decision to refuse bail for him, was yesterday withdrawn by him before the Court of Appeal.

Former Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne was remanded in connection with the controversial White Van Press Conference following an order by the Colombo High Court. Subsequently, he filed an appeal before the Court of Appeal challenging the judgment of the Colombo High Court. Counsel Tharindu Rukshan appearing for Rajitha Senaratne informed court that his client has given instructions to withdraw the petition since he has already been out on bail.

Court of Appeal two-judge-bench comprising Justice Achala Wengappuli and Justice Priyantha Fernando decided to withdraw the petition following the petitioner’s request. Through this application, the former Health Minister is seeking the Court of Appeal jurisdiction to set aside the High Court’s order and to release him on bail accordingly.

Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris appeared for the Attorney General.
