PM urges plantation wage hike without delay

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday urged the plantation company owners to make proposals in the next few weeks on increasing the estate sector workers' day's wage to Rs. 1,000 without delay.

The Prime Minister made this suggestion while requesting them to think positively on increasing their day's wage. He also stated that reaching a final decision on increasing the day's wage of the estate sector would be easy in formulating the next budget proposals too.

He made these remarks during the meeting held on the matters under the patronage of the Prime Minister yesterday with the participation of relevant ministers, plantation company heads and the officers.

The meeting was held based on the request made by Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC) to increase the day's wage of the estate sector workers to Rs. 1,000 by adding price share supplement, productivity incentive and attendance incentive to the day's basic salary of Rs. 700.

The CWC made the demand from the plantation sector company owners earlier.

Minister Dr. Ramesh Patirana, Prime Minister's Secretary Gamini Senarath, CWC Vice Chairman Senthil Thondaman, CWC General Secretary Jeewan Thondaman and plantation company heads participated.
