Latest power bill the most accurate: CEB

Officials of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) stressed yesterday that the latest bill issued for electricity consumption in May is the most correct and up-to-date bill. Even though it seems to be bit high, the bill has been calculated taking into account only the number of units consumed within that time period.

They said that consumers’ lack of knowledge on the issue has created a controversy about the payment of electricity bills. CEB officials were directed by Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera to clarify the issue with regard to the payment of the electricity bill to the public.

Accordingly, during a press conference held yesterday, CEB officials said that household electricity consumption in the months of March, April, and May is comparatively higher compared to February as result of the lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Even if the Bill issued on May seems to be bit high, it is the most up-to-date bill, they said.

CEB officials further said that even if the consumers were late to pay electricity bills for March, April, and May, there will be no additional charges imposed on them. However, this does not apply to the electricity bill for June, since the country has returned to normality.

Minister Amaraweera also commenting on the issue, said that every electricity consumer has their own account at the CEB, and that their payments are deposited to their respective accounts.

Therefore, even if a consumer had paid an amount higher than the due charge, the money does not go to waste as the excess amount will be reduced from their next bill, the minister said. The same applies to the Lanka Electricity Company (LECO) as well.
