The Olympic Day Celebrations 2020 was held in grand fashion at the National Olympic Committee Sri Lanka headquarters in Colombo yesterday with a difference due to Covid-19 pandemic.

The celebrations were graced by the Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akira Sugiyama who planted a ‘Mee’ tree (Madhuca Longifolia) – a tree that provides Oxygen to the atmosphere. The event was held under the theme of “Plant a tree for a new lease of life”. The president NOC SL Suresh Subramaniam, Secretary General NOC SL Maxwell de Silva and K.D.S. Ruwanchandra Secretary Ministry of Sports were also participated. Over three hundred athletes and others planted over 300 trees around the island during the last two weeks.

Guest of honour Sri Lanka’s Olympic silver medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe, former Sri Lanka cricket captain Roshan Mahanama and former National sprint champion Summa Navaratnam were also participated, representing sporting icons. (KR)
