Karuna’s utterances affirm LTTE brutality - Minister Dinesh

Foreign Relations Minister Dinesh Gunawardena yesterday said that the statement made by former LTTE Eastern Province leader V.Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman has paved the way for countries pointing fingers at Sri Lanka from Geneva to gain a clear understanding on the extent of brutality of the LTTE organisation.

“Certain Western countries keep mum on atrocities committed by the LTTE terrorists.

In this backdrop, Karuna’s comments on the killings of soldiers in the North is commendable,” he said.

Minister Gunawardena was addressing the media after receiving the blessings of the Mahanayake Theras of the Asgiriya and Malwatte Chapters in Kandy yesterday.

He said the 30 year conflict that killed thousands of people belonging to all communities was brought to an end under the dynamic leadership of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

“The former LTTE cadres were rehabilitated and integrated into the society. These rehabilitated youths received then government’s support to engage in livelihood activities,” he said.

He said that the government will make public aware of its position over the agreements that the country has entered into, after forming a strong government at the upcoming General election.

“The government has not taken any decision with regard to the Millennium Challenge Corporation Agreement (MCC) agreement. A committee has been appointed to study the proposed agreement,” he said.

The Minister also sad that public opinion over certain clauses of the MCC agreement which restricts the freedom and the security of the people has not changed.
