Catholic Church condemns Harin’s comments

The National Catholic Centre for Social Communication in response to the statement by former parliamentarian Harin Fernando, implying that Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith gets involved in party politics, yesterday insisted that the Catholic church does not support a particular government.

In a statement issued under the hands of Fr. W. N. Lal Pushpadewa Fernando Omi said that the Church has never worked or is working to set up a new government or seek to topple another.

“The Catholic Bishops Conference in Sri Lanka together with the His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith have at all times been responsible for all actions and decisions made and can assure that there has been no involvement of party politics. We condemn and denounce totally the dishonourable comments made by Harin Fernando,” the statement said.

Full statement:

The complaint of Harin Fernando was based on political issues implying that His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith gets involved in party politics and used the incident of the Easter Sunday bombings, 21st April 2019, to favour the present government to gain power. He mentioned that he manipulated 5 per cent of the Catholic votes polled to promote Gotabaya Rajapaksa for Presidency.

The Catholic Church condemns this unethical and derogatory comments and wishes to state that:

01. The Catholic Church does not support any political party to establish a government or otherwise. The Archbishop of Colombo or any other religious leaders in the Catholic Church of Sri Lanka, neither directly nor indirectly works for the establishment of a new government or seeks to annihilate another. This is not the function of the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka and the world over. The Catholic Church can assure that it does not and will not participate in any party politics.

02. The Catholic Church does not support a particular government but will always support and cooperate with the State and its policies for the betterment of the country and its people. It does not seek favouritism.

03. With the recent covid-19 pandemic, the Catholic Church gave its fullest cooperation to the Sri Lanka government by closing churches, Catholic schools and educational institutes. The Catholic laity were requested to avoid and refrain from congregating and all functions that had been scheduled were cancelled.

04. The Catholic Bishops Conference in Sri Lanka together with the His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith have at all times been responsible for all actions and decisions made and can assure that there has been no involvement of party politics. We condemn and denounce totally the dishonourable comments made by Harin Fernando.

05. His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has always and will stand for justice for the Catholic lay people and has not at any given time used secular approaches. Harin Fernando, as a Catholic and government official should act and speak with responsibility and not make derogatory comments which will affect Catholics from all walks of life.

He as a Catholic should have then taken measures to prevent such carnages and stand for justice for the innocent lives lost that day and perhaps resigned from his post and pressurised the government to take immediate action. Such callous attitude of a Catholic politician is condemned and he should have seen to the course of action that should have been taken rather than pointing to others.

The timely action of His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith prevented further clashes involving the citizens of this country. The unethical and derogatory comments of Harin Fernando have blemished the otherwise much respected image of His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.
