A total of 693,634 voters have been registered to be eligible to use their franchise in the district for the forthcoming general elections, based on the figure in the electoral register for 2019.
The District Returning Officer, Government Agent R.M. Wanninayake told the Daily News there has been an increase of 11,184 voters in the district in the electoral register for 2019, the data of which will be used for the upcoming general elections.
The last Presidential Election was conducted based on the data in the 2018 electoral register.
Fourteen registered political parties have submitted nominations in the Anuradhapura district for the August general elections, of which two nominations were rejected. Twelve independent groups too presented nominations and two applications were rejected.
As such, 22 political parties and independent groups are contesting the elections in the district.
