Karuna Amman’s statement: CID begins probe

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had summoned former LTTE Eastern Province commander Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman to the CID to record a statement over the recent claims he made on the killing of soldiers in the North.

The Acting IGP C.D. Wickremaratne had instructed the CID to launch an investigation into the recent claims made by the former LTTE Eastern Province Commander Karuna Amman on the killing of Army personnel in Elephant Pass and Kilinochchi during the war period.

Speaking to the Daily News Police Media Spokesman SSP Jaliya Senaratne said that the CID had summoned Karuna but he had yet not reported to the CID to record a statement. He said that as he resides in the East he would have to come to Colombo to record the statement.

Last week Karuna Amman made a statement claiming that he is more dangerous than COVID-19 as he had killed nearly 3,000 Security Forces personnel during the war.

According to media reports from the North, Karuna Amman has made this claim in reply to a statement made by the Chairman of the Karathivu Local Government body that “Karuna Amman is more dangerous than the Corona Virus”.

Addressing a political meeting in the Eastern Province recently Karuna Amman claimed that he had been offered a slot in the National List but he had declined as he wanted to enter Parliament with the mandate of the public. Karuna Amman is contesting the election through his own political party the Tamil United Freedom Front which he leads.

He broke away from the LTTE in July 2004 alleging the LTTE leadership was ignoring the interests of the Eastern Tamils and Eastern cadres. Earlier, he had participated as a representative of the terror outfit in several rounds of peace talks abroad with the Government.
