Government to bear farmers’ additional crop seed expenses

The Agriculture Ministry has decided to bear the cost of seeds for farmers cultivating additional crops under the government’s National Food Production Programme in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts of the Northwestern Province.

Agricultural officers are visiting farmers to asses the extent of their lands that are being used for cultivation activities. An estimated sum of Rs.230 million is to be spent on this project, Northwestern Province Agriculture Director W.A. Seelaratna told the Daily News.

These allowances are to be paid to farmers for 16 selected food crops, which include: red onions, big onions, chilies, green gram, potatoes, garlic, ginger, soy, turmeric, and maize.
