Police expand raids against organised crime post COVID-19

Police have increased the number of raids conducted against organised crimes throughout the country in this post-COVID-19 period, Police Media Spokesman SSP Jaliya Senaratne said.

He said that during the 24-hour period that ended last morning, eight suspects had been taken into custody by the STF and the Organised Crimes Prevention Division. They had seized narcotics, illicit liquor, and munitions.

Of them, three suspects were arrested at Hanwella, two at Mathugama, and one other at Mt. Lavinia, the SSP said. They are between the ages 22 to 40. The Organised Crimes Prevention Division also apprehended a 29-year-old male and a 50-year-old female with 1.5 kilograms of heroin in Rambukkana.

According to Director (Legal) SSP Ruwan Gunasekara, judicial actions have been taken against the suspects, and police investigations are continuing.

Meanwhile, the Spokesperson said that during the recent two-month-long curfew period, raids on illicit liquor (moonshine) were expanded; 42,000 individuals were arrested with 100,000 litres of illicit liquor and 1.3 million litres of ‘goda’.
