IG tells CID investigate Karuna claims over killings

The Acting Inspector General of Police has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to immediately conduct an investigation pertaining to the recent statements made by Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan ‘Karuna Amman’ where he said that he had killed 2000-3000 members of the security force during the war.

Police Media Spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police Jaliya Senaratne in a communiqué said that the Acting IGP C.D Wickremaratne has issued a directive to CID to investigate the controversial claims made by Karuna Amman where he had said that several assassinations occurred under his watch when he was an LTTE combatant.

Karuna Amman who was a senior leader in the LTTE made a controversial statement during a meeting in Ampara where he said that he had assassinated between 2000-3000 security personnel during the height of the war. His statements have drawn widespread backlash by several political and civil society groups calling for an impartial inquiry against Karuna Amman.
