Awareness programme on brown plant hopper disease

With harvesting of the Yala season to begin soon, Ampara District Agriculture Department officers are taking measures to protect the harvest from the invasive crop, the brown plant hopper (BPH).

In certain areas, the paddy crops have been affected by the brown plant hopper. Farmers in the Kalmunai area have been advised to be vigilant in using chemicals and to seek assistance from agriculture officials.

An awareness programme in this regard was conducted by Kalmunai Agricultural Extension Centre instructor S. Kiruthika recently. A group of farmers and officials visited the paddy fields in Mawadipalli on a fact-finding tour in this regard.

The harvesting ceremony of vegetable cultivations in the surroundings of the paddy fields was held in the Kalmunai DS division recently. Cultivators in the area are reaping bumper harvests.

Under the Soubhagya Home Garden Project, packets of various seeds have already been distributed to farmers in the Kalmunai area by the Agriculture Department to encourage home gardening.
