Needy families to receive free solar cells: Amaraweera

Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to provide free solar cells to the country’s low-income families.

He said that at the last Cabinet meeting, President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has advised him to draw an immediate plan to make the endeavour a success. Moreover, the Indian Government has pledged its support for the project under the ‘Indian Credit Line’ programme.

Low-income families would not have to pay monthly electricity bills under this programme, Amaraweera said, adding that there are at least 12,500 families in the country without any proper electrical facilities. Around 1.7 million Samurdhi beneficiary families, and 12,500 families who do not have electricity, will be entitled to this facility, the minister added.
