General Election 2020

SLPP to hold ‘environmentally-friendly’ campaigns

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) candidates vying for the upcoming General Election are to hold ‘environmentally-friendly’ campaigns, MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said. He was speaking at a meeting of journalists of the Kurunegala District, held yesterday in Hettipola, Kurunegala.

A main point the parliamentarian highlighted when speaking about this was the pasting of posters on public property. He said, “During the the 2019 Presidential Election, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa disapproved the pasting of posters on public property, and all candidates of the upcoming election should follow his example.” Jayasekara also said that police personnel are to be deployed at several areas to remove such illegal posters.

The MP said that instead, candidates should focus on utilising electronic media to convey their messages, and that the National Election Commission (NEC) should allocate equal time slots to all parties for this purpose.

Speaking on the possible second wave of the Coronavirus, the MP said warned that the number of participants allowed at election rallies should be restricted to a minimum.

However, media coverage to all participants, in both print and electronic forms, is essential at this juncture, he added.
