Actions of certain Bhikkus unbecoming of their positions: Maha Sangha

Sri Lanka has earned the respect of the world’s Buddhist community for being the hub of Theravada Buddhism. Therefore, it is the foremost duty of the country’s Maha Sangha to act in a manner which does not damage that recognition, the country’s Chief Prelates said in a joint statement.

They said that it is evident through mainstream media that the actions of certain Buddhist monks were not appropriate for their positions.

“The Maha Sangha, which abstains from such undue affairs, are the ones better-suited to hold the title of ‘Bhikku’,” they said.

The Chief Prelates added that that Buddhism has endured for over 2,600 years in the ‘Post-Buddha Era’ due to the existence of disciplined Bhikkus within the ‘Sasana’.

Malwatte Chapter Chief Prelate Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera, Asgiriya Chapter Chief Prelate Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanaratana Thera, Amarapura Sect Chief Prelate Ven. Kotugoda Dhammawasa Thera, and Ramanna Sect Chief Prelate Ven. Napane Pemasiri Thera contributed to the joint statement.
