Country suffers doctor shortage – survey

A recent survey from Health Ministry has revealed that government hospitals and medical centres suffer a shortage of 4,289 doctors.

A report on the shortage of doctors has been forwarded to the Cabinet by Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi, and the Cabinet has already decided to extend the retiring age limit of the government doctors to 61 years.

The country produces about 1,500 doctors annually but many of them leave the country.

“About 900 doctors either go abroad or retire annually,” Dr. Kurunegala DMO A.Priyadarshana said at a meeting of midwives of the Kurunegala District today (18) at the Bingiriya Youth Training Centre.
