Elephant symbol confined only to a board today - Maddumbandara

The Elephant symbol of the UNP is confined only to a board today, General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Ranjith Maddumbandara said.

“The UNP Working Committee granted permission to formulate a coalition. UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe signed the letters to appoint Sajith Premadasa as the leader and to appoint other officials. It is not the SJB that committed a mistake, it was them. They filed a lawsuit and tried to stop the SJB nominations, but the Courts threw it away.”

Speaking at a meeting with SJB activists in Kotmale on Tuesday, Maddumabandara said the SJB considers the SLPP as the main opponent at the upcoming General Election.

“The majority of the citizens stand with us. UNPers in the trade unions and villagers have now joined forces with the SJB. How could a leader who could not do anything and was unacceptable for 26 years be tolerated?”

“The previous Government imposed taxes on the affluent class and brought relief to the oppressed class while the present government had taken off the taxes on the affluent class and had imposed them on the impoverished,” Maddumbandara said.

He said the present Government had imposed taxes on essential items such as dhal and canned fish. “For the last six months, the Government had displaced the farmer. The Government could not provide fertilizer on time. It had fallen into a position where they are unable to provide a guaranteed price for paddy.”
