Sajith will return to UNP after polls - Navin

Nuwara Eliya District UNP candidate Navin Dissanayake yesterday said that Sajith Premadasa will return to the UNP after the General Election, just like Gamini Dissanayake and Rukman Senanayake did.

Dissanayake pointed out that when Gamini Dissanayake and Rukman Dissanayake returned to the UNP they had to pay Rs. 5 as the party membership fee. He pointed out that this is not the first time issues surfaced in the UNP in its long political history.

Dissanayake made these observations at a press briefing after paying homage to the Sri Dalada Maligawa and calling on the Maha Nayake Theras of the Malwathu, Asgiri and Ramanna Nikayas.

Dissanayake pointed out that in 1970 the UNP suffered a major defeat. However, after several years, the UNP secured a landslide victory with a 5/6 majority at the 1977 General Election. He stressed that no one can do away with the United National Party or its “Elephant” symbol.

Dissanayake also said that some people are “day dreaming” by staking claims to Sirikotha. This should only be done in accordance with the party constitution and not by muscle power.

Speaking of his younger brother Mayantha Dissanayake’s decision to side with Sajith Premadasa, Navin said he respects his brother’s political decision. He is however saddened by the fact that his brother only received the tenth position in the National List of Samagi Jana Balawegaya. He said the JSB will only receive about five slots in the National List.
