Rs.3.50 per kg tea export levy suspended

The government has temporarily suspended the Rs.3.50 per kg promotion and marketing tax on tea exports for six months as a financial relief to maintain stability in the country’s tea industry, Co-cabinet Spokesman, Plantation Industries and Export Agriculture Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said.

He was speaking at the media conference held yesterday at the Government Information Department to announce the decisions taken at the meeting of Cabinet Ministers who convened on Wednesday under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Among the challenges the tea industry had to confront with amidst the COVID - 19 pandemic conditions are continuous maintenance of the monitoring activities of tea factories, comparatively decline of the procurement power of most of the countries that import tea, supply chain issues as well as fixed maintenance of quality in the products are the major issues prevailing within the country at present.

Therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal forwarded by the Plantation Industries and Export Agriculture Minister to suspend tea promotion and marketing tax of Rs. 3.50 already charged on a kilogram of tea exported by each of the registered exporters for a period of six months as a relief for fixed maintenance of the tea industry amidst the difficulties mentioned.
