Following DMC’s landslide risk assessments:

Railway stations between Ohiya and Badulla to get rain gauges

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) recently said that their Badulla District Coordinating Unit is to install eight rain gauges at all railway stations from Ohiya to Badulla.

The Unit will also carry out data collection and record-keeping of the said rain gauges as these areas could have potential landslide risks.

The DMC also stated that, according to the Badulla District’s Disaster Management Plan and Disaster Risk Assessments, railway stations from Ohiya to Badulla have been found to be vulnerable places during rainy seasons. The main objective of this programme is to assess the rainfall in the surrounding areas, including that at railway stations, and to arrive at a preliminary assessment of potential landslide risks in those places.

The Centre added that the landslide hazard assessment was carried out in collaboration with the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO).

Under this programme, Station Masters of the Badulla, Hali-Ela, Demodara, Ella, Hiloya, Kinigama, Bandarawela, and Diyatalawa Railway Stations were provided with technical knowledge on rain gauge installation, data acquisition, record-keeping, and field training.

This will provide a better understanding of landslide threats to the railways in the coming months, the DMC said.
