Forging of President’s signature:

Magistrate denies bail to former BOC employee

Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake rejected the bail application made on behalf of a person arrested on suspicion of forging the President’s signature on counterfeit documents.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said that the main suspect has been identified as Prasanna Aruna Kumara, who was previously employed at the Bank of Ceylon (BOC).

When the case was taken up before court, the Attorney-at-Law appearing on behalf of the suspect informed the Magistrate that the CID previously stated that the suspect had received assistance from a person attached to the Prime Minister’s Office.

“Two days later, however, the CID stated that no one from the Prime Minister’s Office had any involvement in the case,” the Counsel said.

The Magistrate observed that the CID had earlier made such a statement before him. Replying to that, the CID said that the suspect had received assistance from a person attached to Presidential Secretariat.

They also said that they are looking into that connection as well.

The Magistrate ordered the suspect to be further remanded till July 1.
