Abduction and forced disappearance of 11 youth:

Fort Magistrate issues warrant for former Navy Lt. Commander’s arrest

Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake has issued a warrant for the arrest of former Navy Lieutenant Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi.

He gave the order when the magisterial inquiry into alleged abduction and forced disappearance of 11 youth in Colombo was taken up before court, yesterday.

Former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Ravindra Wijegunaratne and Lieutenant Commander Galagedara Laksiri have been accused of aiding and abetting the former Navy Lieutenant Commander to evade courts.

On a previous occasion, the magistrate said that the second suspect, Galagedara Laksiri, had prepared a visa for Hettiarachchi to leave for Malaysia using a fake passport. He had stated that the former Navy Lieutenant Commander also committed an offence under Section 45(1) of Immigration and Emigrants Act.

Magistrate Dissanayake said that the CID had arrested the two suspects who had helped Hettiarachchi leave the country, but that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had failed to arrest the main suspect of the case. Further inquiries were fixed for September 9.
