Case against former IGP, Defence Sec. postponed till Oct 23

The case against former IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, in connection with the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, was postponed till October 23 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage, yesterday.

The two former top officials have been accused of failing to take measures to prevent the Easter attacks, despite having prior knowledge of it; and were remanded on charges of criminal negligence and murder. They are currently out on bail.

When the matter was taken up, Deputy Solicitor-General Dileepa Peiris, appearing on behalf of the Attorney-General’s Department, told the magistrate that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had concluded the investigation with regard to the incident.

He also stated that the CID had recorded statements from 14 police officers. DSG Peiris pointed out that the CID had sent extracts of the investigation to Attorney-General, seeking further instructions. He added that they would provide the necessary instructions to the CID after studying the extracts of the investigation.
