IOM gifts Rs 45 m worth equipment

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) handed over technical equipment worth Rs 45 million to Sri Lanka yesterday. The equipment included sophisticated cameras, skin temperature monitors, advanced communication systems, infrared thermometers, special masks, PPC coverings and gloves.

Industrial Exports and Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga accepted the items from IOM officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

The Japanese and Australian Governments had provided IOM with necessary funds to make the donation.

The minister, who spoke to the media after receipt of the equipment, said that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had instructed the aviation authorities and relevant stakeholders to hasten the repatriation of migrant workers.

Accordingly, steps will be taken to repatriate those who wish to return to Sri Lanka from a number of countries before August 1.
