‘President’s timely steps prevented COVID 19 outbreak’

The timely measures taken by the government under the guidance of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa helped curtail Corona outbreak, Former Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake said.

He was addressing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) media briefing yesterday in Colombo.

With the measures taken by the Government, the mortality rate of Coronavirus is rather low compared with the number of deaths in many other countries, he said.

He added that the government offered Rs 5,000 allowance for the people. He said that no one can disobey the health regulations imposed by the health authorities, but without a court decision, no one is arrested, he said.

He said that he will get nine seats of 12 in the Kandy District even though the Central province has several ethnic groups.

Former Parliamentarian S. B. Dissnayake said that the President urged the heads of State banks to provide the people with loans since he wants to keep the country’s economy moving forward.

“We know that the economy is stagnating as a result of COVID 19. As a remedy, we wanted to release Rs. 600 billion for the people,” he said.

He further said that a vote on account was presented in Parliament to pay the monies of people but the opposition opposed it as the opposition leaders had no knowledge of the economy or finance.

“We forwarded the Vote on Account to settle the monies of people, contractors and to move the economy. The President, no sooner he came to power, introduced a relief package with various loan schemes. But it is regrettable that it is moving slowly. Certain countries such as Germany and Japan handed over money to people, so their economy grew and they became world economic giants. So, the President urged bank authorities to offer loan facilities as much as possible to the people,” he added.

He said that former Parliamentarians Rajitha Senaratne, Arjuna Ranatunga and Champika Ranawaka tried to dismantle Avant Garde and Rakna Lanka enterprises.

Dissnayake said that when concerning the political arena of Sajith Premadasa, he has been trying to destroy the United National Party (UNP).

Former Parliamentarian Sisira Jayakody said the SPPP will secure a landslide victory at the forthcoming general elections under the leadership of the President. Similar to 2010, the opposition has shattered into pieces and therefore a stable new government with a two/thirds majority will be formed.

“Coronavirus positive cases are reported mainly from returnees. However, if one says that no expatriates are allowed to come to the country, it indicates that these people oppose bringing Sri Lankans to their motherland, he said.

Jayakody said that no room will be left for the owners of errant finance companies to exploit the people again.

“Finance company owners will not be allowed to play with the monies of people anymore,” he said.
