Man found dead with gunshot injuries at Independence Square

The man whose body was found with gunshot wounds near the Independence Square in Colombo last morning was identified as 64-year old Rajeewa Prabash Jayaweera and the police suspect that he may have taken his own life.

Police found a Point 22 pistol hanging on his neck and a letter.

The body of the victim had been first detected by the officers of the police patrol at independence square last morning.

It has been revealed that the victim was a resident of Police Park and had served as a manager of SriLankan Airlines and also a freelance writer.

Police suspect that the victim had taken this course of action due to a family dispute.

The deceased is said to have sent a text message to his brother on Thursday night stating that he had written him a personal letter.

According to the police the letter indicates that the deceased had decided to take his own life because of ill health and he didn’t want to be a burden to anyone. The deceased is said to have left his home around 6.45 on Thursday evening and had handed the key of his car to his maid and asked that it be handed over to his brother. The wife of the deceased is said to be residing in the UK.

The brother of the deceased had lodged an entry at the Bambalapitiya Police Station upon receiving the message, but had failed to locate the deceased last night. The Cinnamon Gardens Police are conducting further investigations and have obtained statements from the maid of the victim and his brother.
